The Operation.

posted in Cat Stories |

Why is it that when you bring your cat home from the vet following an operation, it never wants to sleep on the lovely warm cushion you’ve lovingly prepared for it? Legs going in all directions following the anaesthetic, you’d think it would be only too pleased to lay down quietely.

When we broughr Grover home from her “little operation” she insisted on walking all over the furniture and seemed intent on climbing as high up as possible.
I found myself following her round the room, arms outstretched, ready to catch anything that might fall, including her.
When she finally decided to settle down under a chair in the sitting room I was well pleased, and decided to leave her in peace.
Big mistake!
When I went to check up on her a few minutes later, she was just in the process of removing the last stitch from the new wound in her side. I couldn’t believe my eyes, the pain must have been dreadful, but Grover was nothing if not determined.
The hole in her side was now clearly visible and very open.
Back to the vet we went.
At first he wanted to keep her overnight again, but must have seen the look on my face, and so agreed to do what he could there and then. Off she went with him into the back of the surgery, only to reappear sometime later with a large bandage wrapped firmly round her middle.
When we got home she spent the first hour trying to run away from this ‘thing’ which had coiled itself around her body. Finally when she realised she couldn’t shake it off, she settled down.
When I got up the following morning, I didn’t really know what to expect. Grover didn’t disappoint me. During the night she had set about trying to chew the bandage off, as a result of which it was beginning to fray, and a thin string lead from it to Grover’s mouth.
I had visions of it eventually coming out the other end, what a sight that would have been!
As luck would have it she hadn’t completely swallowed the lose end, and I was able to remove it from her mouth, and we eventually settled back into out normal routine.
We called her ‘The Armadillo’ for the next couple of weeks, and when we finally took the bandage off, all was well.
I still can’t get over how painful it must have been for her. I’m just glad it all turned out OK in the end.
